I am a Scorpio so clearly it was inevitable that I would be drawn to Maggie Stiefvater's new book
The Scorpio Races. The races occur every November on wild, unpredictable water horses. Deaths are not uncommon in these races to both the male riders and their horses. However, Kate Connolly has taken it upon herself to enter and try to win in order to save the only home her and her brothers have ever had and have left of their deceased parents. Not only must she overcome the obstacles of being the first girl to ever enter the Scorpio races but also the ridicule from the young men that she will be racing against. Kate's determination deserves complete respect as she does not ever back down, despite the odds.
This book intensifies with each turning page until you find yourself rooting for not only Kate but the returning champion, Sean Kendrick. Inevitably, they find themselves falling in love which causes even more angst when each has a reason for winning that will leave you hoping for a happily ever after ending that is nearly impossible in real life.
